CONVENTION NEWS

Would you like to participate in the 2009 Convention? Volunteers are needed to help tend the iris beds at all of the major gardens.

Do you have the following attributes for the job?

  1. -Love to be outside surrounded by beautiful plants

  2. -Thirst to know more about iris and how to grow them well

  3. -Time to spend a couple of hours every week to 10 days in the garden

If the above describes you, we would love to get to know you while you get to know the latest varieties of iris.

Volunteers who log at least 25 hours in the convention gardens during the coming year will be recognized in the convention handbook and have the opportunity to acquire some of the increases after the convention activities close in the summer of 2009.

May 3rd will be our city wide work day to prepare for the peak bloom weekends which are typically the 2nd and 3rd weekends in May. The teams for each convention garden should be in the gardens by 9 AM to weed and deadhead.

Listed below are the team leaders for each garden and the time they will most likely be working at the garden after April 20 weather permitting.

K-State Research & Extension Center

Team Leader - Jerry Hoke 913-904-8901

Thursdays 4:30 - 6:30 PM

Overland Park Arboretum

Team Leader - Carolyn Ash 913-486.5337

Wednesdays after 5:30 PM

Powell Gardens

Team Leader - Pat Taylor 816-765-1757

Tuesdays 9:30 AM

If you can’t make it to the May 3rd work day, GKCIS members and non members who wish to help with the gardens should contact the team leader for the garden of interest and work out an orientation meeting and flexible work schedule.

Our mission at GKCIS is to cultivate interest in the culture, propagation and  hybridization of iris.  We will consider our convention a success, if we are able to open the eyes and hearts of area plant lovers to the beautiful world of iris.

We hope to see you in the garden!
